How to Get BIS Certification & License Easily

A BIS Registration Certificate is a prerequisite for a manufacturer to sell its products in the Indian market, whether the manufacturer is domestic or foreign. In this article, we will explain how to obtain BIS certification/registration for products covered under BIS.

Step 1:- Check the applicability of BIS to your product?

Before proceeding with BIS registration, the most important aspect is to ascertain whether your product falls under mandatory BIS registration requirements. This process involves a detailed study of the product’s technical properties, specifications, and intended end use.

Step2:- Determination of Applicable BIS Scheme?

After ascertaining whether the product falls under mandatory BIS registration, the applicant is required to determine the applicable BIS certification scheme—that is, whether the application is to be filed under Scheme-I (ISI / FMCS Scheme) or under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)

Step3:- Preparation of Documents:-

Once the applicable BIS scheme under which the application is required to be filed is finalised, the next step involves the preparation of documents and submission of the application in accordance with the requirements of the selected scheme.

Step 4:- Testing, Inspection, and Audit:-

One of the most important aspects of BIS registration is product sample testing in the case of CRS registration, and audit, inspection, and sample drawl in the case of ISI/FMCS registration. Under the CRS scheme, product samples are required to be tested by BIS-recognised laboratories located in India, and the test report must be submitted along with the application. In contrast, under the ISI or FMCS scheme, the BIS inspection team visits the manufacturing facility, conducts a detailed audit, and draws samples on-site for testing as part of the certification process

Step 5:- Queries in Case of Discrepancies in the Application:-

If any discrepancy is found in the application, the BIS team will raise a query, and the applicant is required to respond within the prescribed time period specified by the BIS. Failure to submit a reply within the prescribed time may result in rejection of the application by BIS.

Step 6:- Grant of Registration Certificate

Once the BIS department finds the application to be complete in all respects, it grants the BIS Registration Certificate along with a unique number, commonly referred to as the R-number. The registration is valid for a period of two years, and the applicant is required to file a renewal application before the expiry of the validity period to continue the registration.
